A “domain” name – what it is and why do you need it?

Domain name is a unique word, or a couple of words, usually associated with an IP address of a web server, that represents a location on the Internet where you put your website. You need a domain name because it gives a name to your place the World Wide Web.

You don’t need to buy a .com … they are mostly used for businesses. Try one of the other top-level domain names like .org or .net or .info.

If you want a domain name specific to Canada, you should choose a .CA domain; you can choose .US if you want it for the United States. For new businesses starting up, the .BIZ domain name will work.
